The backbone of an effective work environment is morale. Morale is the spirit and sense of well-being that a group of people share. It is very important not only for engaging employees, but retaining them as well.
Effective leaders and managers know to keep an eye on morale as well as ways to strengthen it. This is important because low morale among employees can lead to higher turnover rates, reduced productivity, and a lack of workplace cooperation.
How are effectual managers and leaders keeping company morale afloat? Here are some ways:
Keep employee value top of mind. Every employee wants to know their job is validated and valued. Unfortunately, this gets out of alignment in the day-to-day grind and isn’t always top of mind for employers. It’s important for leaders to share words of encouragement and recognition to employees all year long.
Go on an outing with teammates. Every work team needs time outside of to build camaraderie. The list of team-building opportunities is endless, but here are a few ideas to get you started:
Go out as a group:
- volunteering
- attending sporting events
- group dinner or lunch
Bring the happiness into the office:
- cater lunch once a month
- host an ice cream social
- hold a workspace decorating contest
Evaluate your benefit offerings. More employers are delighting employees with more than health insurance and retirement savings plans. Consider ideas such as offering flex time, free snacks in the cafeteria, and on site wellness programs.
Set fun team goals that aren’t about work. It’s a super way to build camaraderie, have fun, and let the team get to know each other on a new level.
